Happy Friday Everyone !
I'm so excited about this post - it's a fun, fast, and cheap project that can spice up any boring plain window !
Warning : You are about to go into picture overload.
Curtains can be are expensive...even the Walmart is asking 30 dollars....a panel !
Holy Mac.
Nope haven't stopped saying that yet.
I'm just not interested in paying that much money for a decoration.
Yes, a decor piece, because let's face it, I will never use them - we already have blinds on all of our windows.
This is a cheap alternative to give a plain boring window a little bit of life !
This is what you'll need :
I purchased my foam board at the Dollar store for 1.25 a sheet. I used about 9 sheets.
My material is from Fabric.com, it was 6.77$ a yard and I purchased 6 for this project.
1. Cut your foam board to the size you would like your valance to be.
2. Build up the foam by taping other smaller pieces to its ends. These will be what is attached to the wall on either side of the window.
3. Cut the bed foam (or batting) to the exact size of your foam board.
4. Flip it, measure and cut your material - make sure you cut enough to wrap around the valance.
Side note : You may want to cover the whole thing - I didn't need to as I have blinds on my windows which will hide the back of the valance.
BUT remember that you can see IN windows too...be sure that when you are outside you see material and not just the foam board with masking tape.

5. Take your cut material and iron it.
Do it.
Seriously.
I found out the hard way.
6. Glue time ! Use your hot glue gun to glue your material to your foam board new stylish valance.
TA-DA you are done !
I decided to hang the valance with self adhesive dots.
These things are amazing and surprisingly stick to walls in a big bad way.
So here is a before picture of my dining room :
Now with my new DIY valances !
Aren't they great ?
Hope you guys enjoyed this tutorial as much as I do.

WOW! Finally a craft project that is as simple as it claims to be.
ReplyDeleteIn other news, the view out your window is beautiful.
Hope you're enjoying your SITS day.
Stopping from SITS! I love how simple this is. I was worried it would be super challenging!
ReplyDeleteLove this. We've done DIY valences, but we used wood, which can get expensive if you're doing several valences. Plus, it requires my husband. I never thought of using foam board. Genius! Thanks for the tip.
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS Day! Love your blog. :)
I love the bird fabric!
ReplyDeleteThis actually looks simple enough for me to attempt! I am not good at this stuff- AT ALL!!!
ReplyDeleteLove the window valences, they came out great! Reminds me that I need to do mine. Love your header pic too. Happy SITS day!
ReplyDeleteVery cool! They really do bring the room to life. Happy SITS day!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great, simple idea! I never would've thought of this. Happy SITS day! THanks for the great tip.

They look wonderful and completely change the room. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun, easy project, and it really brought life to your dining room =)
ReplyDeleteI love this! Cheap & easy! We move every 2-3 years with the military, and curtain rods and curtains are costly (because none of the houses that we live in EVER have the same size windows). This is definitely going in my "to do" box for the next time we move!
ReplyDeleteWow, looks great, and very easy! And what a great thing to use in places like apartments, with the little dots, so no holes to worry about. Love it!!
ReplyDeleteWe are moving this week and I'm so excited to have Valences (Vanlency?) in our new home!!
ReplyDeleteHi, I'm visiting from SITS. Wow - your valances turned out really well!I'm going to share this with my tweeps :) (@lifethegreeway).
ReplyDeleteI read this just in time! We're moving into a new house over the weekend, so I can already see myself getting this done soon. What a difference it made in the room! Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteSimple, easy and looks super cool!
ReplyDeleteVery nice, I wish I had time, I really do....it completely changed the room. Visiting from SITS.
ReplyDeleteDucted tape! My kind of DIY project!! I need to try this for my living room.
ReplyDelete*Visiting from SITS.
Thanks for the idea! I am building a house that has similar windows in the kitchen. Love it!
ReplyDeletei love the light fixture above your table..where did you find it?
ReplyDeleteThanks ! I found it at Homesense !
DeleteThese are perfect! How tall are your valances?
ReplyDeleteThanks Kim ! I made mine to be just about 20 inches but I think your best bet is to hold the foam board up and mark off what looks best for the exact window you are doing :)
ReplyDeleteLove this project! I definitely like the idea of using foam instead of wood. So do those dots hold it pretty well? Also do they tear the paint or leave any residue after you take them down? Avid renter until hub becomes a doctor over here lol!
