Let's talk buns.

No, I don't mean the ones you have below your back, or the ones you dunk in cinnamon and eat.
Let's talk Hair Buns !
Before we get into the "how to" let's discuss my hair.
Alright...
Let's just say when the hair gods were handing out their beautiful locks - I wasn't on the top of their list.
Actually, I was probably near the bottom.
I like to call it  my "skinny hair".
It makes me feel better so let's go with it.
My hair is thin and broken. And my hair stylist would agree that it's because sometimes I think I should attempt to be blonde.
You would think that after 4 times of failing as a blonde babe I would learn my lesson.
I'm not meant to be a blonde. Period. I just need to accept it.
Okay - getting off track.
I have skinny hair.
And let's face it  - Buns and skinny hair don't mix - unless you're into rocking a pea size bun.
If so - power to you - I totally do it too.

But look at this baby. And I don't mean the pile of laundry - ignore that one.

Yeah that's right that's my SKINNY hair.
So what if there's an actual sock in there too - Just look at the size on my BUN !
Baby got back.

I was skeptical of the Pinterest sock bun until my sister forced me to try one.
Thank you sock gods.
You have made my hair fat.
In the PH way...wait do people still say that ?

You can find the tutorial along with a "how to" video HERE.

Thank you Pinterest - You have once again made my day complete.

A BIG PS - I'm headed to Europe for the whole month of August which means I'm looking for some fabulous ladies to guest post on my blog. If you are interested email me at talesofadomesticmama@hotmail.ca
Can't wait to hear from ya !

Wishing everyone a fabulous weekend ! Since Sunday is Canada Day I will post on Monday !
That's cool eh ?

Parents of the year goes to...

Yesterday we had what you would call the complete opposite of a relaxing evening...
Between the crazy rain outside, the many time outs inside, the seven men working on finishing the basement, the grocery shopping, the lack of naps, burning supper, the phone calls, organizing my new buisness, Mr.'s crazy day at work, and my wonderful seasonal allergies - I forgot it was Tuesday.
Son of a.
I forgot it was TUESDAY.

Picture this.
It's 10:48 pm and I was ready to get some shut eye....like 5 hours ago ready.

"Oh my" I said as I flipped over in bed and gently nudge hit  the Mr. "It's freakin' Tuesday !"
I may have used a different word but let's keep this PG.
"So" he says.
"It's SOCCER night and WE forgot!"
Yes, WE - I'm not taking complete responsabilty for this mistake.
"Oh no we missed soccer !" says the Mr.
"It wasn't JUST soccer -  it was his soccer graduation!"
Aka the last day of toddler soccer. I know I'm the worst.
"I can't believe we both forget about this, you never forget these things" - Mr.
"I feel like the worse mother of life right now" - Me.

Silence until 11:06 pm

"Please don't fall asleep right now, I'm so upset, he was probably going to get a little certificate or trophy or something for completing this season and there were BLOW UP castles for them to play in ! I can't sleep I'm too upset. Are you upset ? Are you sad ? " - Me.

"Yes Ashley I am but just bring him to lots of play dates this week to make up for it." - Mr.

Sidenote : Now, no offence to my lovely male readers but, if that's not a man's way of thinking I dont know what is !
I'm laughing now, last night...not so much.

After a few more sighs, a couple of sad thoughts and a set of watery eyes, I finally fell asleep.
I woke up this morning ready to tell C.A.P what his not so fabulous parents forgot.

After my long " not so 2 year old friendly apology" he responds with this : "It's fine Mama ! Go play in sandbox?"

Yes, he's not quite three yet, but boy oh boy, can that little man make his Mama feel better.
So off to the sandbox we went.

Despite feeling a bit very upset at our lack of scheduling skills yesterday I think hope C.A.P will forgive and hopefully forget his parents mistake, or maybe we should leave that one out at his wedding...

Now it's time for a playdate and a stop at Walmart to pick up an agenda.

Thanks for stopping in today - Hope everyone is having a great week !

Quick potatoes

Everything about these potatoes are great.
Quick & Easy.
But most importantly yummy !

They literally take 5 3 minutes to throw together and 25 minutes to bake.

I just gave you like 35 more minutes to watch Ellen during supper prep.
You are very welcome.

Here are what ya do :
Cut your potatoes into slices and microwave them for about 5 minutes.
This cuts your oven bake time.
If you don't like using the microwave just up your cook time in the oven.

In a oven ready dish - Mix one can of cream of mushroom soup with a tiny bit of water.
Maybe 5 tablespoons - I just eye ball it. I'm definitely no Rachel Ray here guys.

Mix in a bit of Parmesan, Mrs. Dash, some parsley and a bit of pepper.
Place your sliced potatoes in the mixture and make sure to stir them in so they are evenly covered.

Optional : Top the potatoes with grated mozzarella before placing them in the oven.

Bake them at 350 for 25 minutes or until tender.

Enjoy !

Hope everyone is having a great weekend.

See you tomorrow - Thanks for reading my blog.

Giveaway winner & a mini DIY

Happy Mid week guys !

Let's start with the Giveaway we had last week !
The WINNER of this Bird's Nest Necklace is....

Congratulations Meagan - Check your email and respond so I can get this puppy shipped to you !

Thanks to everyone who participated - there will be lots more giveaways to come !

Now on to today's little DIY.

How convenient, it's another necklace. I swear I won't be turning the blog into "101 of necklace making" but this one is just to simple and cute not to share !

What you will need :
A sheet of felt
Fabric of choice (small amount)
Glue gun and glue sticks
Necklace (I got mine using the 40 % off at Michael's of course !)

Step 1: Cut small felt circles. I decided on 5 - these will be your base.

Step 2: Cut small fabric circles. You will need many of these to complete your 5 "flowers"

These give you an idea of the size your fabric circles should be.

Step 3: Bunch up each little piece of fabric and glue them to the felt base circles.

Do this until you have filled all 5 felt circles.

Step 4: Place "flowers" on left over felt sheet as you would like them to sit on the necklace.

Step 5: Hot glue the 5 flowers to the felt and trim the felt so it's hidden behind flowers, as shown below.

Step 6: Hot glue necklace to the back of the felt an you are done !

Simple, cute, and another cheap mini project. This makes me happy.

Hope everyone is having a great week !

Thanks for stopping in and reading my blog.

Time to save some money !

Let's talk planters.
They are expensive.
Like 50 dollars expensive.
I'm talking the tall ones here. Yes, I know they do go on sale but I wanted 2...right away.
That's like 100 bones, and let me tell you I can find a better way to spend 100 dollars then on two large objects that sit at my front door as a decoration.
So today, I'm sharing a way to have your cake and eat it too ! Or, in this case, your tall planters.

I made these puppies for a grand total of 8 dollars.

I love the Dollar store. It's like Christmas every time I go in that place - seriously they have new stuff every week and it excites me.
I found these large planters for 2 dollars each.
They aren't a pretty color, but nothing a little spray paint can't fix.

Please ignore the horrible cell phone picture I'm about to show you.

I had a greyish/silver color in my spray paint stock that I decided to use.
The beauty of these are that you get to pick your color. I thinking I may even switch them to a bright color in the near future.
Shhh, don't tell my Mr.
So, I gave them a coat of paint glued them on top of each other using some liquid cement.
You could really use any type of glue that bonds to plastic.
Fill them with your choice of plant and voila !
You've got yourself 2 new tall planters for less than a quarter of the price of a store bought one.

Check out mine on my front step - not too shabby right ?

Hope I've inspired you to make your own - Have a great day everyone !

DIY Window Valance

Happy Friday Everyone !

I'm so excited about this post - it's a fun, fast, and cheap project that can spice up any boring plain window !
Warning : You are about to go into picture overload.

Curtains can be are expensive...even the Walmart is asking 30 dollars....a panel !
Holy Mac.
Nope haven't stopped saying that yet.
I'm just not interested in paying that much money for a decoration.
Yes, a decor piece, because let's face it, I will never use them - we already have blinds on all of our windows.

This is a cheap alternative to give a plain boring window a little bit of life !

This is what you'll need :

I purchased my foam board at the Dollar store for 1.25 a sheet. I used about 9 sheets.
My material is from Fabric.com, it was 6.77$ a yard and I purchased 6 for this project.

1. Cut your foam board to the size you would like your valance to be.

2. Build up the foam by taping other smaller pieces to its ends. These will be what is attached to the wall on either side of the window.

3. Cut the bed foam (or batting)  to the exact size of  your foam board.

4. Flip it, measure and cut your material - make sure you cut enough to wrap around the valance.

Side note : You may want to cover the whole thing - I didn't need to as I have blinds on my windows which will hide the back of the valance.
BUT remember that you can see IN windows too...be sure that when you are outside you see material and not just the foam board with masking tape.

5. Take your cut material and iron it.
Do it.
Seriously.
I found out the hard way.

6. Glue time ! Use your hot glue gun to glue your material to your foam board new stylish valance.

TA-DA you are done !

I decided to hang the valance with self adhesive dots.
These things are amazing and surprisingly stick to walls in a big bad way.

So here is a before picture of my dining room :

Now with my new DIY valances !
Aren't they great ?

Hope you guys enjoyed this tutorial as much as I do.

Ever go on a camping trip, a friends get together, or a potluck and not know what to bring ?
Look no further.
Cue cheesy music...now.
Point is these little treats are amazing and are a hit for both kiddies and adults  !

I love  Rice Krispie square and make them all the time with C.A.P, I also love love LOVE chocolate.
So combining them could only mean good things for my taste buds.
And only taste buds people...these don't quite fit the healthy diet standards. But hey, we all need a cheat sometimes right ?

These are obviously so simple to make and I'm sure you could tell what to do just by looking at this picture but I'll include that too...just in case, you can never be too prepared.

What you need :
Marshmallows
Rice Krispies
Reese Pieces ( I used 20 mini cups)
The amounts will all very on the size dish you are using.

1. Make your Rice Krispie mix (the recipe is on the Kellogg's box so Ill be skipping that obvious part !)
2. Grease your pan and dump half of your mixture into it.
3. Press the mixture down evenly in the dish.
4. Unwrap your sweet tasting Reese Pieces and place them over your Rice Krispie mixture.
Make sure you cover your whole dish, making it a layer of deliciousness.
5. Place the other half of your mixture over the chocolate and flatten this as well.
6. Cool, Cut and Enjoy !

Hope everyone is having a great week - Come back Friday I've got a goody for you !

Tweet Tweet

This week I was crafty in a different kind of way.

Last night I had a movie date with one of my sisters, I picked her up and told her we had to make a quick stop at Michael's because I had a gift certificate and it was burning a hole in my wallet.
Shopping Addiction ?
Naw.
I found some sweet sales on items to make jewelry - had no idea what I was going to do with them but I could worry about that later. They were on sale.

I surfed good old google this morning and found these cuties :
 1st source
2nd source
3rd source

...so I had a plan.

This is what I used for this mini project :

Here are the steps in making the "egg nest" :

I simply wrapped a small loop to the back using the same piece of wire

 I kind of love it.

Thanks for stopping in today - Hope everyone has a great weekend !
